Sycamore Creek Ranch Memory Care
Paying for care

Let's Talk About the Thing Nobody Wants to Talk About

Finances

You're already carrying enough guilt about needing memory care. The cost makes it worse.

So let's be direct. Memory care can be expensive. Sycamore Creek Ranch costs less than most facilities because we're smaller and more efficient. But it's still a significant investment.

Here's what you need to know about paying for it.

Family reviewing finances

Medicare does not cover long-term memory care.

Every family asks. Now you know.

The important part

The Honest Truth About Medicare

Medicare does not cover long-term memory care.

Let's say that again because every family asks.

Medicare does not pay for the kind of care your loved one needs at Sycamore Creek Ranch.

Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing care after a hospital stay. It covers rehabilitation. It does not cover custodial care, which is what memory care is.

Medicare Advantage plans don't change this. They have the same limitation.

We're not telling you this to discourage you. We're telling you so you don't waste time chasing something that won't help.

How Families Pay for Memory Care

01
Insurance

Long-Term Care Insurance

If you bought long-term care insurance years ago, this is what it was designed for.

Most policies cover memory care. But the details matter.

What to check:

  • Does your policy cover assisted living or only nursing homes?
  • Is there an elimination period (a waiting period before benefits start)?
  • What’s the daily or monthly benefit amount?
  • How long does the benefit last?

We work with dozens of long-term care insurance policies. We can help you understand what yours covers and how to file a claim.

If you have long-term care insurance, use it. That’s what it’s for.

02
Veterans

VA Benefits for Veterans

If your loved one is a wartime veteran or the surviving spouse of a wartime veteran, they may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance benefits.

This benefit can help cover memory care costs.

2026 Maximum Annual Pension Rates with Aid and Attendance:

  • Single veteran: $29,093/year ($2,424/month)
  • Veteran with one dependent: $34,050/year ($2,837/month)
  • Surviving spouse: $18,672/year ($1,556/month)

Important details:

  • The veteran must have served during a period of war (doesn’t need to be combat)
  • Net worth cannot exceed $163,699 (in 2026)
  • The benefit is based on need, calculated as the gap between income and medical expenses
  • Application process can take several months

Many veterans don’t know about this benefit. If you or your loved one served, it’s worth investigating.

We can connect you with a VA benefits specialist who can help you apply.

03
Government

Medicaid

Medicaid can help pay for memory care in Texas, but it’s complicated.

Standard Medicaid typically covers nursing home care but not assisted living or memory care. However, Texas has waiver programs that can extend coverage to certain assisted living and memory care settings.

The challenge:

  • Eligibility is based on income and assets
  • There’s usually a waitlist for waiver programs
  • Not all memory care facilities accept Medicaid (we do not currently)

If you think Medicaid might be an option, talk to an elder law attorney. They can help you understand spend-down strategies and timing.

04
Most common

Private Pay

The reality is that most families pay for memory care out of pocket.

This usually comes from:

  • Retirement savings
  • Social Security income
  • Pension income
  • Investment income
  • Sale of assets (home, property, investments)

Other Options to Consider

Reverse Mortgage

If your loved one owns a home but needs the equity to pay for care, a reverse mortgage can convert home equity into cash while allowing them to retain ownership.

This can work if the house isn’t being used anymore.

Life Insurance Policy

Some life insurance policies have cash value that can be borrowed against or surrendered.

Others offer accelerated death benefits if the policyholder has a terminal diagnosis.

Family Contributions

Some families pool resources. Adult children contribute monthly to cover the cost together.

It’s not always easy to coordinate, but when it works, it spreads the financial burden.
